Principles of Performance

The subtitle of this second edition of Refinement and Repetition is Principles of Performance, and it was chosen very carefully. What I wish to convey to you is that there is no magic to be found in the pursuit of competitive pistol shooting. There is no single technique that the GMs know that will transform your shooting. There are certainly better ways of doing things, but these better ways were all discovered by someone who set a goal and sought a way to get there.

If we analyze any skill, we learn very quickly that it can be improved with a simple understanding of the desired goal.

If our goal is a reload in under a second, all we have to do is break down the entire process and find the wasted time. In this example, it’s amazing how much time we waste hitting the mag release. And while we’re wasting time not doing that, our weak hand is just hanging on to the gun waiting for something to do. This improvement in your reload speed can be realized with an unloaded handgun in the privacy of your own home. You won’t need a book, a DVD, or lessons from a GM, although these are all very helpful. You will definitely need an open mind.

This same process can be used for every skill we need in competition shooting. What is the real goal, and what are the obstacles? Where is the wasted time? Instead of chasing technique, I’d like to you better understand the Principles of Performance.
